This year a group from CompassionBloggers.com is traveling in the Phillipines to meet with the children they sponsor through Compassion International. Each day they blog and tweet about it hoping that more people will share their enthusiasm and joy in sponsoring children by sponsoring a child themselves. From what I've read, Compassion International is a great organization. I love the support and encouragement they give their sponsors through projects like Compassion Bloggers and these yearly trips.
We have been child sponsors through World Vision and Holt International for almost thirty years because of our ties through adoption. (Melea was adopted through Holt, which began, in part, through the ministry of World Vision founder, Robert Pierce.) Each experience has been different. Some long term. Some short term. Sometimes we've learned more about 'our' child than other times. Some correspondence has been personal, some generic. Of course we love it when we receive letters and pictures from 'our' child, but the most important thing to us is to make a difference in the life of a child who otherwise would have little or no hope. Period. That is our greatest joy and reward. If I can encourage others, if I can encourage you, to find it in your heart (and budget) to sponsor a child, I promise you this; you won't regret it! Feel free to send me an email if you'd like to hear more about our experiences.
